I have a confession to make….I love Amish stories, so I was thrilled to read another great book, only this story incorporated the Amish countryside of Missouri as its setting. Patchwork Dreams, written by Laura V. Hilton, is her first book in The Amish of Seymour series. One reason I wanted to read this book is that I live fairly close to Seymour, Missouri, so I was kinda curious to see how the story would go.

This book tells the story of how two people fell in love, pretty much from the moment they set eyes on each other. Jacob had been sent to Missouri on false pretenses, mainly so his father could get him away from his girlfriend, an influence who wasn’t the greatest for a man about to commit to the Amish church for life. Even though he’s upset, he’s instantly intrigued by Becky, or Bex as he nicknames her. Becky has enough heartache of her own and has pretty much resigned herself to being an old maid for life. You see, her reputation had been tarnished within the community when she’d made a mistake not so long ago. It’s uncanny how circumstances throw these two together, and as you read, you get to share in their roller coaster ride of emotions, obstacles, and life issues that seem to get in the way of their love for each other.

Reading this story, I felt like I got to know each character on a deeper level, as the author really has a way of describing each character and taking the reader along for the ride. The story was really a simple love story, but it had enough human emotion and real-life scenarios that it was easy to identify with on a human level. The book was interesting and kept me wanting more. In fact, I’d love to see a second book come out.

You can purchase Patchwork Dreams for $6.99 on Amazon. You can also read the author’s blog, Lighthouse-Academy.

Great news!

The Life Ready Woman, written by Shaunti Feldhahn & Robert Lewis, is a guide for moms that helps them with Thriving in a Do-It-All World. Lately, I’ve personally been so overwhelmed by everything that at times, things aren’t getting done because I just can’t handle it all. There’s too much going on at once. We moms have a hard time understanding that we can’t do it all; we need the guidance of our Heavenly Father to even make it through one hour, let alone a whole week.

In this book Shaunti really examines what the Bible says about our lives as women and the responsibilities we have both toward our God and our families. She examines women and their roles throughout history, as well as myths and things we tend to take to heart. She examines all of this from a Godly perspective, really digging into Scripture to guide us along with her, in a totally non-threatening, non-judgmental way.

One reason I really like this book is that it’s written partially by Shaunti, a woman who struggled with the juggling act herself. I like that she’s been where I’m at….she’s lived this balancing act called motherhood. I also like that she makes the tips and guidance she gives very easy to apply to your own life by giving hands-on things we can do to examine our own situations, our own lives.

You can purchase The Life Ready Woman for $9.64 from Amazon. You can also read more reviews on Litfuse.

About The Life Ready Woman:

Are you a ‘Doing it all’ or ‘Do what matters’ woman?

Whether a stay at home; or working mom, an airplane-hopping executive, an empty-nester caring for multiple generations or a single juggling high demands of career and personal life, today’s fast-paced modern world leaves women gasping for balance. We as modern Christian women want to look to the Bible for guidance on how to manage our lives — but because the world of women looks so different today than it did when the Bible was written, it is hard to find chapter and verse that seems to apply to our situation today.

Thankfully, God has given us exactly that timeless, unchanging guidance for how to find peace, clarity, and God’s best for our lives once we know where to look! The Life Ready Woman: Thriving in a Do-It-All World, reveals a profound biblical roadmap for how each of us can find the abundant life we are longing for, rather than the stressful, torn, how-do-I-balance-it-all life we often feel like we are trying to keep up with today. Actually being a LifeReady Woman means that you are clear about your life, bold in your faith, and able to find God’s best for you, and the end result will be that you not only survive but thrive in our do-it-all world.

God has given every wonderfully unique woman different skills and abilities, different desires, and different temperaments — and every woman around the planet and through the ages is certainly living in different circumstances. But no matter what a woman’s life looks like, the Bible says that God has an individual mission and plan that He’s carefully designed for each of us. And He wants us to find it. Starting January 2011, The Life Ready Woman and the Life Ready Woman Video Series will help every wonderfully unique woman to thrive as she identifies and courageously pursues God’s unique design and callings for her. LifeReady Woman puts you on a roadmap to make decisions that will lead to relief, delight, and fulfillment instead of regret.

Since the beginning of January, I’ve been going through the Lean Cuisine #31Days Challenge with other members of Collective Bias. It’s been somewhat of a struggle for me, as I’ve struggled to cut down on my chocolate and sugar intake; I have an addiction.:) No, but seriously, I crave sweet, and those cravings can be a huge struggle when you’re trying to usher in a healthy lifestyle for yourself and your family. When I had the opportunity to review this book, I knew that it was exactly the right time to do so.

Made to Crave, written by Lysa Terkeurst, has to do with Satisfying Your Deepest Desire with God, Not Food. Oh boy, the subtitle alone is enough to get me. How to satisfy my cravings with my Heavenly Father….rather than chocolate. I knew this was going to be a hard book to read and apply to my life….but I’m up for the challenge. What I truly appreciate about the book is that within the pages, the author relates her own VERY REAL struggles, her own challenges, her own findings as she started to let go of the cravings and turn to God instead of the junk food. She gives insightful devotional type chapters that are short and sweet, leaving you with substance to think about. At the end of every chapter are also Personal Reflections, things for the reader to think about and ponder, to work through. I also appreciated the fact of how she related that this journey can’t be done alone; we need those accountability partners and friends (hence, my Lean 11 partners) to help us wade through the cravings and struggles we will, no doubt, face.

Chapter 5, We Were Made for More, really spoke to me. Her quote, “We were made for victory,” is so motivating and inspiring on this journey that I am on. To be honest, I haven’t completely finished this book yet. I plan to finish it slowly, along with my healthy lifestyle journey, because I need this substance, the verses she gives, to help me stay on the path. For me personally, I plan to extend my #31Days journey to the rest of this year, as I hope to get back to a healthier weight….and as I usher in healthier foods and recreation for my family, as well.

I’d definitely recommend Made to Crave as a resource for anyone who wants to cut the junk out of their life and get onto the path toward victory. It’s not the book that will get you there….but the book will encourage you and uplift you along your journey. You can purchase Made to Crave for $8.99 on Amazon. You can also read more reviews on Litfuse. Read further to learn more about the book, the author, and a great contest you can enter to possibly win a KINDLE.

About the book: Just because a woman finally fits into her skinny jeans doesn’t mean she’s won her battle with food. Too often, women overlook the spiritual component to their physical struggle with healthy eating. Made to Crave taps into the desires God gave you to consume food without letting food consume you!

Made to Crave is the missing link between a woman’s desire to be healthy and the spiritual empowerment necessary to make that happen. The reality is we were made to crave. Craving isn’t a bad thing. But we must realize God created us to crave more of him. Many of us have misplaced that craving by overindulging in physical pleasures instead of lasting spiritual satisfaction. If you are struggling with unhealthy eating habits, you can break the “I’ll start again Monday” cycle, and start feeling good about yourself today. Learn to stop beating yourself up over the numbers on the scale. Discover that your weight loss struggle isn’t a curse but rather a blessing in the making, and replace justifications that lead to diet failure with empowering go-to scripts that lead to victory. You can reach your healthy weight goal – and grow closer to God in the process. This is not a how-to book. This is not the latest and greatest dieting plan. This book is the necessary companion for you to use alongside whatever healthy lifestyle plan you choose. This is a book and Bible study to help you find the “want to” in making healthy lifestyle choices. 224 pages. Companion Bible study DVD set also available. http://madetocrave.org/purchase-resources/

The third book in the Lancaster County Secrets series is here, The Choice, written by Suzanne Woods Fisher. Oh, how I love this author and her ability to weave a story, twisting in the tiniest of details to create a masterpiece. This book focuses in on Lainey O’Toole and Bess Reihl. Lainey has come back to Stony Ridge, just passing by on her way to culinary school. However, circumstances, or maybe Divine Providence, dictate a different kind of future for Lainey, one even she herself couldn’t have predicted. For as long as she can remember, having been placed in the foster care system from the age of ten, Lainey has just wanted a family, a sense of belonging. When she decides to stay in Stony Ridge, she starts to feel that belonging within the Amish community. There is something about this simple life, even with all of its sacrifices, that draws her more and more toward home.

Bertha Reihl is grandmother to Bess Reihl, who comes to stay with her over the summer and help with her rose growing/jam making business. Bess and Jonah moved away to Ohio years ago when Jonah’s wife was killed in a terrible accident. Bess is just coming of age, also starting to feel her first love. The story weaves around Bess and Lainey’s transformation and their growth. Not everything is as it seems, and there is a mystery surrounding Lainey. I don’t want to give up the story, but I will say that it’s a story that kept me turning page after page. Then again, Suzanne Woods Fisher is one of my favorite authors. Read more reviews on Litfuse, and you can also read more about this book below….

About the book:

Fifteen years ago, Lainey O’Toole made a split-second decision. She couldn’t have known that her choice would impact so many.

Now in her mid-twenties, she is poised to go to culinary school when her car breaks down in Stoney Ridge, the very Amish town in which her long-reaching decision was made, forcing her to face the shadowed past.

Bess Reihl is less than thrilled to be spending the summer at Rose Hill Farm with her large and intimidating grandmother, Bertha. It quickly becomes clear that she is there to work the farm–and work hard. The labor is made slightly more tolerable by the time it affords Bess to spend with the handsome hired hand, Billy Lapp. But he only has eyes for a flirty and curvaceous older girl.

Lainey’s and Bess’s worlds are about to collide and the secrets that come to light will shock them both.

“Beautifully written, ‘The Search’ is a skillfully woven story that takes readers through unexpected twists and turns on the long country road toward truth. Fans both old and new will find themselves immersed in this heartwarming–and surprising–tale of young love, forgiveness, and coming to grips with the past.”

About Suzanne:

In no particular order, Suzanne Woods Fisher is a wife, mother, writer, lifelong student of the Bible, raiser of puppies for Guide Dogs for the Blind, a gardener and a cook…the latter two with sporadic results.

Suzanne has loved to write since she was a young teen. After college, she started to write for magazines and became a contributing editor for Christian Parenting Today magazine. Her family moved to Hong Kong for four years, just as the internet was developing, and she continued to write articles in a 44-story high-rise apartment, sending manuscripts 7,000 miles away with a click of a key.

After returning from Hong Kong, Suzanne decided to give her first novel a try. For four and a half months, she worked on an antediluvian computer in a cramped laundry room. She didn’t even tell her husband what she was up to. When the novel was completed, she told her family at dinner one night that she had written a book. “That’s why there’s no food in this house!” said her slightly insensitive sons.

Undaunted…Suzanne found a small royalty publisher for that book and wrote three more (all earned multiple awards). With help from an agent, she now has numerous books under contract with Revell. Also look for Suzanne’s Amish non-fiction, Amish Peace: Simple Wisdom for a Complicated World, a non-fiction book of stories and examples about the Old Order Amish, as well as Amish Proverbs, and coming in Spring of 2011, look for Amish Values for Your Family. The Choice and The Waiting are the previous books in the Lancaster County Secrets Collection.

Writing, for Suzanne, is a way to express a love of God and His word. With every book or article, she hopes readers get a sense of what faith really looks like in the daily grind. She hopes they realize that life can be hard, but God is good, and never to confuse the two.

Chocolate….what more can I say? Chocolate and I have had an understanding for quite some time. I love chocolate; it’s my one weakness when it comes to food. Lately, I’ve been trying to very much limit myself as to how much I eat, so I got my family involved in this review; that way we could share the chocolate and enjoy it over time.

Choccreate Chocolates is a place where you can basically design your own chocolate bars. It’s fun to do, but it’s also perfect for gifts. What do you decorate the chocolate with? Try fruit, nuts & cereals, gourmet items, themed candies, sprinkles, herbs & spices, etc. Choccreate was brought about through childhood memories, rich in a mother’s legacy of preparing chocolates for her children every holiday season. I was excited to create some chocolate of my own, one bar for each person in my family. It was super easy and honestly, kinda fun!

First of all, I had to choose between milk chocolate, dark chocolate, or white chocolate. Then I was able to choose different toppings. The toppings are priced differently, so I mixed and matched. Some of the fruits available include bananas, raisins, figs, blackberries, etc. Nuts & cereals include granola, corn flakes, pumpkin seeds, pecan nuts, etc. Gourmet includes things like 23karat gold powder, candied violet flowers, mimosa flowers, etc. Extra ingredients include Cheddar Gold Fish, gummi bears, M&Ms, mini pretzels, brown sugar, etc. Themed decorations include mini hearts, blue/pink feet, red white & blue stars, etc. Herbs & spices include chili powder, cinnamon, granulated honey, etc. Some of the ingredients sounded wonderful, and others seemed questionable, but to each his own, I guess.:)

Here’s a peek at what I created. The kids were so excited, they tore into them before I could even get pics. Don’t worry, I didn’t let them eat them all in one sitting; they’re still working on them, a little bit at a time. First of all, the box they all came in was beautiful, all wrapped up with a bow. The box is definitely reusable; I’ll probably use it to store scrapbook items or crafting supplies. For my husband, Dan, I made a milk chocolate bar with mini pretzels. One of his favorite snacks is chocolate covered pretzels, so this was perfect for him.For my son Jacob, I made a white chocolate bar with mini hearts. He loves white chocolate, and the mini hearts were perfect for Valentine’s Day.For Jaden I made a Smores candy bar with milk chocolate, mini marshmallows and Teddy Grahams. He loves it, and it did turn out so cute! Finally, for myself I made a milk chocolate bar with raisins; one of my favorite snacks when we go to the movies is chocolate covered raisins. Yum!I tried a couple bites, just so I could give my honest opinion (likely excuse, huh?). Each bar is very yummy; I have to say the Smores bar is my favorite so far. The chocolate is not quite as creamy as I would like, but it is very good. The toppings really add to the whole flavor and feel of the bars. It’s a unique gift, perfect for Valentine’s Day or even Easter, both of which are coming up soon. Prices are definitely affordable. My most expensive chocolate bar was $5.15. These would make great “just because” gifts, as well….hint to all the husbands out there. In fact, you can use a special discount for 20% off with the coupon code: heartprints, valid through 2/28/11.

The great news is that, thanks to Choccreate, I’m giving away a $25 gift certificate, so that one reader can create their very own chocolate creations! You can enter to win by doing one or more of the following; just be sure to leave a separate comment for each way that you enter. I’ll draw the winner, via random.org, on Friday, February 4. This giveaway is open to U.S. and Canada. Good luck, and have a wonderful day!

The New Year is quickly approaching, and with it comes the need for a completely new planner, so that I can track all of my work assignments, projects, household chores, to do lists, etc. For the past year, I’ve been using the Family Time DotMine Planner from DotMine. This planner has saved me so much time, so much stress….because I can map out my days, one week at a time; I can see everything within one notebook/planner, not having to wonder what is happening from day to day.

First of all, one of my favorite features of this planner is the durability of it, the strong plastic cover on both front and back sides. If one of my boys happens to spill something on it or even more likely, draw on it with markers, I can just wipe it right off, which makes it really nice. It also sets my mind at ease if I take it with me places, knowing that it’s not going to get all bent out of shape. With upcoming trips, I know that I can easily slip this notebook planner down into my laptop case and carry it with me wherever I go.

My planner runs from August 2010-December 2011. In the very front and the very back of the planner are the Master Schedules for the different seasons, i.e., fall 2010, winter 2010, spring 2011, summer 2011. They actually have a little fold-out flap that you can use to mark your place in the planner, so that you can compare notes with your daily/weekly schedule. These front and back schedules, though, are for you to mark down your Master Schedule, your recurring family events….things like tae kwon do, choir rehearsal, Cub Scouts, etc. It makes it really nice because I don’t have to write these events down every single week; I can just refer to my Master Schedule.

With the beginning of each month is a 2 page calendar layout with small block calendars of last month and next month, as well. Then the planner is broken up into weekly schedules with blocks for each day. On the sides are places for me to add To Do lists, grocery lists, notes, etc. There are even places to put sticky notes. I’ve found that I’ve used the day blocks to list my work assignments for each day, the things that I need to get done for both blogs. Then I use the list section for my daily household to do lists. If there is anything extra that I might or might not get done that week, I put that in my sticky note section. That’s how I’ve been using the planner, and it’s worked so well for me. In one glance, I can see everything that needs to be done for that day. If you were to use the sides as a grocery list, it’s perforated for you to easily carry with you. At the top of each weekly page is a place for you to fill in a special family activity for that week; at the bottom of each weekly page is a quote to inspire. Then at the end of each month is a full Notes page, just for extra space.

The back of the planner includes pages for Family Info (Info for Coaches, Library, Doctors, etc.). There are pages to put down important addresses/phone numbers/email, etc. There’s even an information page for babysitters, so that you can leave your planner open to that page for her/him to see. There are also stickers to help you remember important dates. The back cover of the planner even includes a pocket for you to slide papers, bills, or other important documents into. This is nice when I go on trips because I can slip in a copy of my flight itinerary, business itinerary, media kit, bills that might need paid while away, etc.

I definitely love my DotMine Planner, and that’s not just words I’m typing right here, right now….it’s actually my honest opinion/feelings toward this planner. It has saved me in so many situations because I can just look down, in two winks, and see what we have going on. You can purchase these planners for $17.99 at Borders, Borders Express, Waldenbooks, Amazon, Calendars.com, and Timemine.com. Dotmine also has other types of planners available. Be sure to Like dotmine group on Facebook or follow @timemine on Twitter, as well as sign up for their email newsletter. When you Like them on Facebook, be sure to leave them a message on their Facebook page.
