Motivate Me Monday: Parents
I’ll be the first to admit that sometimes the days and even weeks can go by, before I realize that I haven’t even picked up the phone to talk to my family. Last night, we celebrated my dad’s birthday, and I just felt an incredible urge to share this. My dad and mom are getting older. For me, “old” is a pretty strong word, and it’s not like I think they are even close to being elderly….it’s hard for me to see my parents as getting “old”er. I just see them as Mom and Dad. The truth is, though, we are all getting older. It makes me really sad in ways. Then, in other ways, I see the blessings, as my parents have been together for almost 50 years now.
As I sat in their house last night, I could smell familiar, memorable smells of both my grandmothers’ houses. The memories just came flooding back. For me, I’m starting to realize that time is quickly passing me by, and I need to really take advantage of the time I have now. I need to make the time to spend with my parents while I still can, to hear their stories, to let my children hear their stories, to just “be” with them.
So, this week, I encourage you to reach out to your own family, your own parents. Maybe your parents live really far away; mine live about an hour and a half away. At least, though, sit down and write them a letter, not just an email, but a handwritten letter. Pick up the phone, and give them a call. You just never know when it could be your last time to hear their voice. Show them how much you care….just be there.
