TOS Crew: Sue Gregg Cookbooks: Breakfasts

My experience with the Crew this year has led to a wonderful variety of products and books and curriculum that we’ve been able to try for ourselves and review. Cookbooks are always something I love to look through and even use, if given the chance. Sue Gregg’s cookbook, More than…Breakfasts…with Blender Batter Baking & Allergy Alternatives, is a cookbook that carries within, healthier alternatives than your average breakfast.
This cookbook is really not your average cookbook either. Not only does it contain recipes, but it contains pages of education on how to properly plan your breakfasts, including a Quality Guide to Ingredients. I found this guide to be one of the most helpful things about the cookbook because it explains why certain dairy products, fats & oils, fruits, grains & flour, nuts & seeds, etc., are good for you and what kinds to buy or not buy. A lot of the recipes within are aimed at helping those with food allergies still be able to find healthier alternatives, so they can enjoy some of the same types of foods. Here’s a peek at the contents of this book:
- Preface
- Cook’s Prayer
- Planning for Breakfasts- includes education about whole grains, menu planning, recipe nutrient information basics, allergies info, equipment check list, etc.
- Milk Alternatives- including education on saturated fats, dairy choices, pasteurization, goat’s milk, yogurt, soy milk, rice milk, nut milk, etc.
- Cereals- including info on sprouting, recipes for direct heat, creamed cereals, crock-pot cereals, thermos cereals, etc.
- Eggs & Accompaniments- including education on buying eggs, storing eggs, toast, omelets, and all different kinds of egg recipes, etc.
- Fruits
- On-the-Go Shakes & Muffins
- Waffles, Pancakes, French Toast & Toppings
- Special Occasions
- Potpourri
- Menus
- Index
- Cut-Out Tabs
This cookbook is more like an encyclopedia of healthy breakfast choices and alternatives. Sue uses a lot of Scripture to back up her nutritional info and the points that she tries to get through to the reader. For a Scripturally-based cookbook, this is a great choice.
We actually tried the Maple Butter French Toast, which you use no eggs in; you dip the bread in maple syrup. We honestly did not care for the recipe at all. Dipping in the maple syrup just made a sugary mess of the bread, and it was too sweet and not very good. The regular French Toast recipe that’s included in the cookbook would have been much better, as it uses eggs, and we prefer to use eggs.
My only qualm with this cookbook is that it uses a lot of ingredients that we normally can’t afford to buy. I couldn’t try a lot of the recipes, because my grocery budget just wouldn’t allow for it, with everything else that we have to buy. Some of the ingredients I had never even heard of, so I was really happy to have Sue’s education on ingredients at the front of the cookbook. It is a wonderful resource, though, and one which I will keep and occasionally use, as there are some recipes which we can make.
You can purchase this cookbook for $23.00 from Sue Gregg Cookbooks. You can even try out a recipe that she has up on the Breakfasts portion of her site: Almond Crunch Coffee Cake. Try it out for yourself, and see how it works with your family. To read more reviews, visit the TOS Crew Homeschool blog.
